On Location: Getting Hitched on Your Favorite Movie Set

By  Emily Roper

Couples looking for a unique twist to their wedding venue need look no further than their Netflicks queue or the local DVD rental store.

Many of your favorite movies or favorite movie scenes were filmed at locations that can also be rented out for your big day. From southern mansions to swanky hotels in LA, selecting venues from the silver screen can reflect your personality, favorite movie or even the story of how you met.

Chick Flicks

Cuneo Museum and Gardens in Vernon Hills, Illinois served as the backdrop for the reception and chaotic preparation scenes in My Best Friend’s Wedding, featuring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz. Hold your reception under the tent where Jules and George shared a dance or take your wedding photos in the gazebo built specifically for that infamous kiss. If you’d rather have a more serious love story as the backdrop for your wedding, head down to Boone Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, which served as Allie’s parents’ house in The Notebook. Said to be “America’s most photographed plantation,” Boone’s live oak canopies and extensive gardens will lend a certain amount of southern charm to your big day.

For the Boys

For the groom whose favorite pastime is retelling—and retelling—famous movie quotes, get married at the Fountainebleau Hotel and Resort in Miami Beach, site of the Scarface discussion between Tony and Manny on how to pick up women. Or hop the border to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, home to Parkwood Estates, which doubled as Adam Sandler’s Mansion in Billy Madison. The estate offers a variety of garden space and tent arrangements for your May through September wedding.

I love the 80s

Get married where the Brat Pack danced or Tom Cruise hung out by finding movie locations from your favorite ‘80s films. Say “I do” at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles where Andie and Duckie made up during the prom scenes of Pretty In Pink. Or if pre-couch jumping Tom Cruise flicks are more your style, check out the Drake Hotel in Chicago, a film site for Risky Business. Located on the Gold Coast on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, the Drake Hotel has played host to film crews and celebrities since opening in 1920.

Hollywood’s Golden Age

For film buffs who reminisce about Hollywood’s heyday, find a wedding location that also served as a film site for beautiful starlets and dashing actors. While many movies were filmed exclusively on studio lots during this time, some directors did break the mold to film on site. One such movie, Some Like It Hot, featuring Marilyn Monroe, used the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego as the backdrop for all of the resort scenes. Situated right on one of San Diego’s sun drenched beaches, the hotel offers a magical resort location for your special day.
