Mom's the Word
Tips for helping mothers of the bride & groom look their best
By Kimberley Askew
You’ve already chosen your dress, spent hours deliberating over the bridesmaid gowns, and tackled the problem of your future hubby’s tux. Helping the moms decide what to wear might seem like an afterthought; but don’t forget, this is a big day for them as well and their role in it, an important one.
Often they’re going to be around friends and family they may not have seen in some time and they’ll want to look their absolute best. They’re probably included in your ceremony and they’ll definitely be in many of the photos--purely selfish reasons for wanting them to look fabulous, but they’ll do for extra incentive!
Here's where you, the bride, swoop in with your helpful lists of Do's and Don'ts, cribbed from our list of course. If you need to score points with your future mother-in-law, this is a great way to start things off on the right foot.
Flattery Will Get You Everywhere
Solid colors minimize the waist for an elongated look that’s sophisticated and elegant. If your wedding is a formal evening event, a long dress or two-piece with a jacket and long skirt (like this JS Collections pleated jacket and skirt, $198, available at Nordstrom.com) in the same color from head to toe could be just the thing.
In the case of petite frames, which can be overwhelmed by a long dress, or for a less formal wedding, opt for a traditional suit or knee-length to mid-calf formal or semi-formal dress. An A-line silhouette is both flattering and fashionable. Matching jackets, silk wraps, and shawls artfully placed can also help camouflage a thick waistline.
Less Is More
Think classic and understated when it comes to silhouette, color, and accessories. The mothers’ dresses shouldn’t be the same color as, or clash with, the bridesmaid gowns, so your best bet is to choose a dress or suit a few shades lighter or darker. For instance, if the bridesmaid dresses are a medium-hued pink, magenta or pale pink would work equally well. Another option? Choose a complementary neutral like brown or beige.
Pull It Together
Heels are recommended for a formal wedding, but not stilettos or wedges. When it comes to jewelry, choose a key piece whether it is a string of pearls, a vintage pin, or diamond drop earrings. A vintage handkerchief makes a nice gift and it will probably come in handy during the vow exchange. Antique-Linens.com has a gorgeous selection.
